Today is probably going to be one of my first theme posts, that I have decided I might do on this blog. I've noticed on other blogs people tend to post a couple times a week maybe? I would like to get this as a more common thing I do. So more regular posts is what I want to achieve. I think I have explained this before. So without further ado, I present to you. Foodie Friday. This is my Applefest edition. So as you may, or may not know, on Saturday 15th October, here in my lovely little town, we had something called Applefest. What is Applefest you say? How can you have a festival about apples? Well. To be honest, this is a thing, I think we like to do as part of our Harvest celebrations here. You see in the Fens, we have quite a few farms, and are surrounded by many many fields. So I think it's a big thing they like to do here. I've only lived here 3 years, I should surely know more about this. But alas this was my first ever venture to Applefest that did not get taken over by work. Yay! So I could look at all the apple tasty tasty things.

Here is what we ended up buying ourselves. But I shall not get ahead of myself too quickly.
As we arrived we saw a couple of stalls on our left, they didn't interest us too much, but there was jewellery and some other information stalls. I had hoped to get a proper look after, but I wanted to see some apples first. The parade of stalls directly in front of us from where we arrived there was a joined stall of Cider (which was being sold in bottles and by the pint), and apple juice. There was many types of juice, and unfortunately a HUGE line for both areas, we had to move on. There was a stall next to them that was serving hot and cold apple juice. But again I left him till after I looked around.
We then cam across George's Bakery. Now I love his cakes. He is normally on the Saturday market here, so I knew that I would get something taste from him. As we arrived we noticed most of his baked goods were gone, BUT... There was about three slices of Apple Cake left. I also spotted A Pumpkin Spice Cake. Now I'm a big lover of Pumpkin Spice from Starbucks, so I knew I had to have some! So using all my will, I bought a slice each of those two cakes.

I ate them over the first few days of the week, and I have to say they were both extremely tasty. The apple one was very moist and full of flavour. The icing, didn't have much apple taste, so I am assuming a normal frosting. It was still very tasty. The Pumpkin Spice one... It had the texture of a Carrot Cake, but it was Pumpkin, and there was definitely like a pumpkin spice flavour to the frosting. And it had a cute little Pumpkin shaped shortbread on top. It was absolutely amazing! I love his cakes! :3
After his stall we looked around some others, there was another stall with jewellery, a fudge stall (Which I knew I could have another day because it's just in the town). Then there was a cheese stall. My other half had already run away to get it, and he just had to buy some cheese.

I have to say. I love the name of the farm. This cheese was amazing too! They had little tasters, and I only tried this one, because this was what we purchased. It was lovely. It was like a extremely mature philly garlic and herbs. Mmmmm so good.
We left that stall and there was brownies on the next, another little bakery which we bought chocolate chip shortbread and a chocolate caramel slice from. The caramel slice unfortunately wasn't up there for me. Which is a shame because I used to love caramel slices. I think the caramel wasn't cooked enough for me. It was a softer sugary caramel, than thick stringy caramel. :(
Then we walked along the other side of the green, where they had a hog roast, grilled cheese sandwiches, doughnuts and some raffles, tombolas and birds of prey. Again nothing really caught my attention, so I went back to get some apple juice and cider. The queues had gone down, and first I sampled some of the sweet apple juices they had.
I sampled the Russet juice, which was probably the sweetest juice I've tried. It was so nice, and just made my mouth water more. Then the Crispin. Which I think is a great name, as it is what it says. It tasted like you've bitten into a sweet crisp apple. I then also tried the Falstaff, which was more bitter to me. Wasn't as sweet. The Crispin was definitely the winner for me, although I would have been just as happy with the Russet also.

I then popped to the other side of their stall and sampled a few of their ciders. They had many lovely flavours, but the ones I wanted were Cider with Elderflower (which was lovely), the Cider and Strawberry, and the Cider and Blackcurrant. I ordered a pint of the Cider and Elderflower, because they were just amazing flavours. I loved the Cider and Strawberry, however they didn't sell it in bottles, so I was to miss out, as I had already ordered my pint of cider. I was not going to be able to drink 2, I wasn't sure I was going to drink all of my pint either. So I ended going for the Cider and Blackcurrant.

So with my purchases and cider in hand, I walked off to look at the other market that we have on a normal Saturday. We ended up purchasing some chocolate cake and a few cookies and brownie to send in a parcel, from Audrey's Vegan Cakes. And then headed off to lunch. I needed food to wash down the cider, and I wasn't going to stuff myself with cake just yet.
The rest of the day was just a normal day, having food, wandering around town and then heading home, full of food and cider apparently.
So for my first time attending this Applefest I loved it. It was a lot smaller than I thought it would be. There was also a few places I didn't visit because, I wasn't too sure. Also I didn't have an apple to take to the apple identification service. Which I think is a pretty cool idea to me. It was fun, there was some very tasty things, not everything was to do with apples which was a shame, but still. An autumn day with apples, and lovely crisp weather. What more can you ask for? JJ
