Anti-Valentines Comedy Night

Valentines Day. One of the most long awaited times of the year, for couples, newly couples, new engaged etc. A overly commercialised holiday for shops, restaurants and florists to charge more for people to purchase gifts and confess their love for their partners.

I am not one to do anything for Valentines, whether with my partner, or with friends, because of the specific holiday. I am of the opinion that you should not need not a specific day to celebrate the ones you love, and you should tell those every day, no matter.

Well, despite not being the type of person to do this, I ended up going out on Valentines, with my other half, and two of my friends. Our friend had mentioned a Anti-Valentines Comedy night, with waffles, free drink and this was at a cheaper price of £20, unlike the normal £25 per ticket.

After some debate, I figured why not, and as we both had the evening off, we decided to actually do something.

So... once I had finished work on the 14th February, I headed home and got changed ready for our Valentines Anti-Valentines date night. We headed to our friend's house, as he was the only one able to drive, and we headed to Coton, in Cambridgeshire.

We were one of the first groups to arrive, and once we took our seats (away from the front) we received our free drinks (mojitos and water), and then our savoury waffles. WE watched the stage get set up, and people arriving ready for the evening to get underway.

I had a beef chilli waffle, with cheese, sour cream, and little nacho sprinkles. It was soooooo good. And the mojito was great too. I am not normally a fan of them, as the lime is too bitter. But that's just me.

Anyway after we all ate, the comedy night finally started. The host Jason, was probably one of the best comedians of the night. He was funny, witty and got the most laughs out of everyone the whole night.

Talking about relationships and asking why people seemed to be there as mostly couples, or why a young lad was brought with his parents, seemed to be the main jokes. But it was funny, and the reason why we didn't sit at the front. You never sit at the front of a comedy show.

The first comedian to start their standup was Elle Bert from London. She managed to get some laughs and she talked about her past experiences with dates, and how they all seemed to go very very wrong. Her story of a Tinder date that went wrong with a businessman who was comparing her to her own dating profile, was just amazing and had me in fits of giggles.

The second comedian of the night was Katie Price also from London. Unfortunately she didn't seem to hit it off with everyone. Her jokes as a bi-sexual jew talking about the relationship between herself and her very strict catholic girlfriend, didn't seem to gain many laughs. It was a little of a shame, as I feel with a more queer based evening, she would have done well. However it just seemed to fall very flat.

We then had a break of dessert waffles, and these were just as good as the savoury ones. The waffle choices were either a salted caramel one, or a chocolate and banana. I chose the salted caramel one as I am not a fan of bananas. I had a cider also whilst I waited for the acts to begin again.

Once the break was over Jason came back to introduce the next two acts and again add a few more jokes himself, this time about being an uncle, and how his nephew doesn't think he is cool.

The third comedian was Aaron Spalding, from Ipswich. He seemed to be one of the youngest comedians of the night, and talked about his childhood, and his girlfriend wanting a dog, that he did not want. He was very confident at delivering his jokes, and was getting quite a few laughs.

The final comedian Justin Panks. He was the headliner of the night, and did jokes about his rather "small" penis and how his wife wanted him to circumcise their children, as this is what she was brought up with. He also did jokes about marriage and how hard it is, especially when you have been together for years. Again he seemed to do very well with the audience, getting many more laughs from various people.

I enjoyed the evening very much, and once it was over my friends and I talked about all the various acts. As this was my first comedy night, I did enjoy it, and I would recommend going to see one in the future. I think as a lowkey comedy night, it was great, as it seemed to be local talent, unlike these big comedians like Jimmy Carr, for example.

As previously mentioned, I think Jason the host was probably the one that kept it all together and seemed to get the most laughs. I am interested in seeing some more shows that he performs, as he was actually funny.
